ABOUT ME

a bit long winded, but feel free to skip it if you like, you wont be tested

Hi, I’m Caroline and I wanted to give a detailed account about me, as I know if I was looking for someone to look after my animals I’d want to know as much as I could about them first, so you may find this a bit long winded, but feel free to skip it if you like, I won’t test you on it.

My animals are like my children, so I completely understand how important it is to people when looking for someone to put your trust in with them.

I have over twenty years experience working within the animal industry, but I’ll go back way before that started.

As a child, I always had a huge love and passion for animals

As a child, I always had a huge love and passion for animals. If I was out with my parents and they lost sight of me for a second, chances are I’d be sat on the floor stroking and cuddling a dog I’d found!

I was one of the lucky little girls whose fairy tale came true one birthday, when I was having a party at my cousins house – I used to spend lots of time there as she had a horse, Whisper who I used to go and ride most evenings.

To my surprise, when I turned up on my birthday, there was a pony full of red ribbons and bows that I had ridden a few weeks earlier on the pretense that someone wanted me to check her out for their child, only that child was obviously me! So then I had my own pony, Midge, who was my companion for many years to come.

I was extremely lucky to have the experience

I have never lived without a dog in my life, I was born into a family with a fantastic Golden Retriever named Ceasar, maybe it is to him that I owe my career to now. After Ceasar passed away, we subsequently had four more goldies, all of them together for a number of years! Skipper, Molly, Candy and Prince. I can see myself now as a sixteen year old girl walking them all, two on each side.

Molly was bought for me for my fourteenth birthday and was, along with my pony, one of the best birthday presents I ever had! Prince was Molly’s son, so I was extremely lucky to have the experience of whelping a bitch at a young age.

You’d think with all these dogs as I was growing up, alongside the other small furries I had, I would have my fill of animals, but not me! My mum owned a newsagent and luckily for me, a few doors up was a pet shop. I could have only been about nine when I started spending my weekends helping out in the petshop, which just increased my passion further.

I began volunteering at an animal sanctuary

As I became a teenager, most of my friends spent their days going to the park or into the local town shopping, where as not content with the amount of work my own animals brought me, I began volunteering at an animal sanctuary local to where I lived, where they had at least a hundred and fifty dogs, along with cats, horses, rabbits and various farm animals. I spent most of my time on the dog section, walking, feeding and cleaning, nursing the oldies and the mum and pups.

I got up early at weekend to sort my own animals, so I could spend the rest of my day helping at the sanctuary. Christmas Day would come and while my family sat down to their Christmas dinner, I’d be up at the sanctuary and mine would be plated up to warm up when I got home.

This was my routine for years, then it came to the time when I had to decide what I wanted to do when I left school. Work with animals of course. I was one of the lucky ones, I’d known for as long as I could remember what I wanted to do.

I was so pleased when I found out about a college where you could study a course solely in animals!

During my work experience placement from school, I was very fortunate to  secure it within a local veterinary practice, which then lead to paid employment at evenings and weekends.

I was so pleased when I found out about a college where you could study a course solely in animals! So the next two years I completed a National Diploma  (N.D.) in Animal Care, during which I gained a great deal of experience with a wide variety of species. As well as my lessons and practical sessions on the animal unit, I undertook work experience one day per week. In the first year, I continued at the rescue centre I had been volunteering at for years, then in my second year, I decided to gain experience at a different establishment, so I then worked a day a week at a boarding kennels/cattery and grooming parlour.

After completing and passing my course, my passion grew, so I then moved on to complete a Higher National Diploma (H.N.D) in Management and Welfare of Animals during the next two years. Animal Health and husbandry, behaviour and training are just a few examples of the modules undertaken within the courses. During my work experience on this course, I got to spend it at a local zoo, gaining even more experience with animals many people could only dream of!

Once I completed my H.N.D. I then found work at another boarding kennels and cattery local to my house, where I worked for a year or so.

It was around this time that Muppet, my amazing little Jack Russell joined me. I wasn’t spending as much time at home and missing the company of dogs. Muppet went everywhere with me, including to work!

This lead to me gaining my certificate in education

The college where I had studied were advertising for staff to teach in the animal studies department, so I applied and was successful and carried out a lecturing post for a couple of years. However I missed the “hands on” work with the animals, so it was then that during one of the summers, I learnt how to dog groom and the following year took a post within the same college in which, half the week I ran the commercial grooming parlour, training students the basics of grooming and the other half of the week I instructed students on the animal unit during their practical sessions on how to care for a wide range of animals, along side first aid and animal training modules.

This lead to me gaining my certificate in education and becoming a qualified teacher.

I continued in this role for a number of years and then the animal unit manager job became available and as my passion had always been for the animals rather than teaching, I applied for this and was again successful. It was my dream job, which I undertook for the next twelve years.

During this role, I was responsible for the welfare of all the animals on the unit as well as my team of staff and the students, however me being the person I am, the animals always came first.

A few of the animals I dealt with during this time are rodents, many of which exotic, reptiles, amphibians, birds (aviary and poultry/fowl) fish including marine, dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, cows, goats, pigs, sheep, alpacas, horses, ponies, donkeys, emus and Scottish Wildcats.

cat
I was nominated for Petplan charity volunteer of the year award for my work with the cats.

We also had a cat rehoming centre on site for a well known national charity, so I worked with hundreds of cats all with different characters, old, young, feral,  nursing mums and kittens, hand rearing kittens and finding the cats their new forever homes. I was nominated for Petplan charity volunteer of the year award for my work with the cats.

As you can imagine, not all the animals behave as angels at all times, so I have plenty of experience dealing with, shall we say “more trying” animals, one being an alpaca which used to like to mount staff and students, but this never put me off, in fact it usually strengthened our bond and made me love them even more! And love them I did, each and every single one of all the animals I have ever worked with.

I now have Betty, my Jack Russell and Chumley, my English Springer Spaniel, who spent their lives up until Animal Allsorts attending work with me and being models for the students to practice on, whether it be bandaging, grooming, training or health checks. I’m sure they miss it as a part of me always will, but I think if they could talk, they would tell me they prefer going on walks and meeting new friends than having students practice temperature taking! Then there’s Woody my old man cat, who my best friend rescued from falling from a bridge into the path of a train, when he was a tiny kitten.  All of whom feature on my van, along with other animals that have been part of my working life who I miss dearly.
