The college where I had studied were advertising for staff to teach in the animal studies department, so I applied and was successful and carried out a lecturing post for a couple of years. However I missed the “hands on” work with the animals, so it was then that during one of the summers, I learnt how to dog groom and the following year took a post within the same college in which, half the week I ran the commercial grooming parlour, training students the basics of grooming and the other half of the week I instructed students on the animal unit during their practical sessions on how to care for a wide range of animals, along side first aid and animal training modules.
This lead to me gaining my certificate in education and becoming a qualified teacher.
I continued in this role for a number of years and then the animal unit manager job became available and as my passion had always been for the animals rather than teaching, I applied for this and was again successful. It was my dream job, which I undertook for the next twelve years.
During this role, I was responsible for the welfare of all the animals on the unit as well as my team of staff and the students, however me being the person I am, the animals always came first.
A few of the animals I dealt with during this time are rodents, many of which exotic, reptiles, amphibians, birds (aviary and poultry/fowl) fish including marine, dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, cows, goats, pigs, sheep, alpacas, horses, ponies, donkeys, emus and Scottish Wildcats.
